Xiaomi Mi Mix 2
Hello, Friends! Today I’m going to take a look at Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 Review. It is the smaller than the Mi Mix. It’s rocking almost 6-inches AMOLED display but of course, keeping the signature tiny front and side bezels. So, it’s a huge screen about the same size as the new iPhone, we’re about to see 5.8 to 6-inches. But of course, in a footmark, that’s way smaller and easier to grip even with single hand and the 6-inch screen even though it sounds big for a phone. So, let’s start-
Build & Design: –
The body is ceramic on the rear and aluminium on the sides. So, ceramic is a really dense premium material like I talked about with the Essential phone. It has a premium build quality and I’m getting a lot of fingerprints and smudges on the ceramic rear. But in the hand it feels good, easy access to all buttons and a lot more comfortable than the Mi Mix due to its slightly smaller size.
On the rear, you have 12-megapixels Sony IMX 386 camera. There’s an 18-carat gold ring around the camera and the camera sticks on a little bit though very slightly. Below the camera bump, you have a fingerprint scanner and you have also the Dual-tone LED flash. So, along with the bottom of the phone, you will see two antenna bands there, you have a microphone, Loudspeaker and Type-C port.
The front-firing camera is still located on the chin of this phone or the bottom bezel is now a 12% smaller according to Xiaomi. Now, the aperture of this front facing camera is f/2.2. On the top left of the phone, you have the Dual SIM slot and there is no microSD card support on this phone. Along the top two antenna lines secondary microphone and your earpiece, it’s still not a traditional earpiece because the speakers located internally the sound is then transmitted through that gap here. On the right side of the phone, you have a volume rocker and power key.
The Mi Mix 2 has a 5.99-inch 2160 by 1080p IPS LCD panel which is slightly slimmer than the Mi Mix. The Front camera still in the bottom. The blacks aren’t deep but the colours still very punchy to me. Overall, the picture is very crisp. Brightness is pretty much where it should be for IPS display when out in broad daylight. You can change the colour profile in the settings and there is a reading mode to sort of make things a little bit easier on your eyes, especially during the night time.
The Mi Mix 2 camera is exact same hardware as the rear camera on the Xiaomi Mi6. But the camera app is better than the Mi6 and the camera app is easy to use. Here, you get a manual mode but I don’t like that when you’re using it, you can’t see the change in ISO and the shutter speed in real time through the viewfinder.
In general, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 can shoot great pictures during the day. Colours are vibrant and well balanced. The camera showed as fast and focused times while not as fast as the Samsung Galaxy S8, isn’t bad at all. But it does do a decent job of getting better exposure and adding a little bit of colour to scenes even if it does make the shutters of file speeds a lot slower.
The low-light situations the pictures are good but not great. Pictures look fine when you’re looking at them on the phone but put them on the computer like blown up.
The Mi Mix 2 has 4-axis OIS and while it works during the day it doesn’t seem to work at night. Footage in the daytime as sturdy and clean but at night you’ll see a jerkiness.
This doesn’t really take into account the selfie-shooter which is itself unconventional which is simply odd. I do a lot of video calls these days and that was when I found the camera positioning to be far less than ideal.
Performance & Memory: –
The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 which clocked at Octa-Core 2.45GHz with 6/8 gigabytes of RAM and 64/128/256 gigabytes of internal storage. I had no problems with everyday performance on Mi Mix 2, zipping between apps despite the actual software itself being a little rough around the edges. As expected the phone can handle 3D games without any issues.
However, there is one serious software bug that prevents you from installing games that take a lot of storage space. You simply get an error message every time you try to download and install a game from the play store.I know this can be fixed somehow but this is what you will get out of the box. That’s really frustrating and hopefully, it will be fixed in the future software updates
As this is a global ready smartphone, Google Play services were pre-installed on this device. So, I could use it to its fullest extent. When I use the phone on my T-Mobile account, I had no problems with calls and call quality on that GSM network.
The Mi Mix 2 runs on Android 7.1 Nougat with MIUI 8.5 out of the box. The Xiaomi said there are quite a few features at the MIUI can boast like the quick ball. It’s a small convenient way of getting to the core functions of the phones without relying on the soft keys. There’s also the Dual application which allows for multiple instances of the same app and you can take that even further by putting an entirely different second space on the phone for entirely different experience, on top of the one you already set up.
Now, mainly the biggest issue I have with the MIUI is that it requires a little bit more polish. Overall, the MIUI has come a long way and continues to be supported by the user forum community meaning that updates can come quickly.
The sound in other situations is a bit of a mixed bag, unfortunately. Without a headphone jack, people are forced to use a USB Type-C adapter to use wired headphones with the Mi Mix 2. But I am really quite as upsetting as the external speaker, outside in noisy environments. This didn’t get loud enough and then if I lowered the volume to around 50% or below it felt like there was a noise gate there. So, that lower ends of the audio we’re kind of getting cut off and it made for a really odd listening experience.
The Mi Mix 2 has a 3400 milliamp-hours battery which was able to get me to six hours of screen time without any issues. And that screen time was throughout the course of a 12 to 16 hours workday most of those days. You can charge the device with quick charge 3.0 but it wasn’t something I felt like I had to do at least in the middle of my days. Finally, the supplied charger fully charges the phone in just over one hour and twenty minutes.
Overall, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 is a very good smartphone, it improves on the Mi Mix 1 in every way. So, no dual cameras on the rear of this phone again but it’s definitely an upgrade in the camera department. The fingerprint scanner on the rear is also now faster which is confidence-inspiring and of course, it’s now in that ideal locations for one-handed use.
On the inside, you have some great specs like Snapdragon 835, 6 or 8 gigabytes of RAM, up to 256 gigs of storage and a 3400 milliamp-hours battery. MIUI now has a split-screen multitasking mode so, this is something almost every phone now has except the iPhone where you can do two apps open at once. It’s pretty simple to use and works well.
So, you can really take advantage of the big screen and it’s overall cleaned up, it’s pretty snappy. It doesn’t have much bloat, not many bloatware apps. There is also a special edition which has 8 gigabytes of RAM and 64 gigs of storage and priced at around $720.
