HUAWEI GR3 2017 / Honor 8 Lite
Hello, Guys! Welcome back to another discussion and today I’m going to take a look at Huawei GR3 2017 review which is also known as Honor 8 Lite. I’d like to call this phone the smaller brother of GR5 2017 and that’s mainly because this phone brings a little bit of twist to the design while still keeping the internal hardware specs which made the GR5 such a powerful device in the first place. This phone cost around 19,000 rupees and $170 dollars and you can find it in the official Huawei retailers across the countries.
GR3 has a plastic body but this is a sandwich between two pieces of 2.5D curved glass and this not only does that make it look a lot nicer just a regular flat piece of glass. But also makes it a bit more ergonomic, it’s easier to hold in the hand. Because this is a glass, it catches fingerprints like crazy so be prepared wipe it down from time to time.
We have the power and volume buttons on the right-hand side and these are made of plastic. These are a little soft but they’re still quite responsive. On the left-hand side, we have a Hybrid SIM tray. On the bottom, there is a speaker and another one a microphone. The actual output from the speaker is actually quite nice and I was pleasantly surprised that even at max volume, the audio did not distort at all and it was quite clear. If you’re wondering where the notification LED is, it’s actually located top left of the earpiece.
A very good addition to this device is the fingerprint scanner on the back while we call this the fingerprint 4.0 scanner and this is crazy fast. It unlocks so fast and on top of that, it also supports gestures. So, if you want you can swipe down and up on that fingerprint scanner to toggle the notifications.
The screen is a 5.2-inch FHD IPS LCD 1080p display and as I mentioned before it’s got 2.5D glass on top. Now, using this phone was quite a pleasure because this screen looks very good. It has very nice colours which pop up and are vibrant. And on top of that, the viewing angles too are quite nice but something that I must mention is a very good brightness. That means is you can take it outdoors use it under direct sunlight with literally no trouble at all.
The main camera is a 12-megapixel BSI sensor with 1.25-micron pixel sizes and phase detection autofocus. The front—facing camera is an 8-megapixel BSI sensor with F/2.0 aperture. I’m quite a fan of Huawei camera because they really don’t leave any stone unturned. When it comes to features on this smartphone, you get full manual video and photo controls along with a number of different modes including time-lapse as well as light painting. So, for the average person picking up this phone, it’s just a more exciting experience when using the camera because there’s a lot of room to play around with.
Let’s talk about some actual image quality first, when we go into the daylight photography obviously everything looks very nice. The main camera does a great job, reproducing colour, things look vibrant and there’s a good amount of detail in the photos. The depth of field also quite nice when you take the smartphone into low-light conditions the 1.25-micron size pixels do help. But really you at the end of the day succumb to the downfalls of low-light photography.
Processor & Memory: –
The GR3 2017 is powered by Huawei’s own Kirin 655 processor and I have quite a bit praise for it because I use it on the GR5 2017. The performance on that phone impressed me quite a bit. Now, this CPU is an Octa-Core Cortex-A53 CPU. It’s got four cores are clocked at 2.1 gigahertz and four more cores which are clocked at 1.7 gigahertz. This is combined with 3GB of RAM, 16 gigabytes of built-in storage.
Similar to the GR5, The GR3 2017 took on all of my test games head first and perform quite well. And this is not at all surprising because both of these phones use the same CPU and have the same amount of the RAM. Now, with the process being clocked this high you can actually go in and increase the in-game graphical settings to get a much better and more enjoyable experience. And with power like this, it really opens the doors to how your game on a smartphone. So, to test the smartphone, I’ve played GTA San Andreas, Asphalt 8 as well as Modern Combat 5 and Lone Star Defense 5. And the entire experience was nice and smooth and I really didn’t have any complaints.
I’m glad to this phone ships with Android 7.0 Nougat along with Huawei own EMUI 5.0 skin on top. Now, given the fact that this is a Nougat smartphone, you get a lot of benefits including the ability to use a split screen mode, better battery optimization, better performance optimizations. And my personal favourite the ability to switch between two recent apps by just double tapping the recent key.
Now, everyone has a lot of its own features including things like a one-handed mode and a floating dock. But my personal favourite is the ability to change the software navigation keys along the bottom. EMUI itself needs a bit of work, it’s not the fastest one I’ve seen but an interesting thing that I noted is that it performs a bit smoother when you’re using the app drawer.
It has 3000 mAh battery. This battery actually served me quite well and given the optimizations of Android 7.0 Nougat. Every single day I had about 25-30% battery life and that was regardless of what I using this phone heavily or medium usage.
Reviewing the Huawei GR3 2017 was quite a pleasure. It brings a lot of cool features as well some nice build quality a great camera, notable performance as well as a nice display. But this phone is not perfect by any means and it has some flaws that I’d like in future generations of the product. First of all, maybe next time bring a metal body, the plastic body actually doesn’t feel bad but metal would make it feel better.
Number two, actually put some protection on the front and back glass. Next up even though we do have Android 7.0 Nougat I’d like what way to work on their launcher quite a bit more because it is by no means the fastest thing out there. It’s quite feature-rich it’s actually looking quite nice but maybe a bit more optimization would definitely help this device in the long run. So, overall for 14,000 rupees and 220 dollars, I definitely recommend this device.
