Hello, Guys! Today I’m going to take a look at Doogee S60 Review. In August 2017, the Chinese manufacturer Doogee announced it’s new rugged smartphone called Doogee S60. Good rugged phones are usually expensive but they don’t have the best specifications out there. The S60 is one of the most powerful options available and it costs about 290 dollars. It has the design of the regular smartphone, but there are several surprises inside, such as 6GB of RAM, Helio P25 processor and 5580 mAh battery. So, let’s find out
The Doogee S60 is not only a rugged smartphone but I have to say that this is one of the best designed and well-built rugged smartphones I’ve tested so far. It has aluminium alloy back which helps to give the device a more premium look and feel except for slightly rattling volume keys.
The phone has IP68 rating meaning that you can use it under the water and drop on the ground, it must survive in almost all conditions. USB slots, SIM and MicroSD ports are covered with rubber to prevent water and dust infiltration into the sensitive parts of the smartphone.
As for the camera, we have a 21-megapixel shooter on the back panel and 8-megapixel snapper on the front panel. You can access two SIM card slot and the microSD card slot by using the screwdriver to remove a backplate. Well, it’s not the most convenient way of doing this but that is the trade-off of that IP68 rating and rugged properties of this phone.
SOS & PTT: –
Now a few features in nutshell, there is a highly customizable LED notification light and a few extra buttons, SOS, PTT and a camera shutter key. SOS button can be assigned to a particular contact in case of emergency. The Push-To-Talk feature is connected to a Zelo app shot this feature works as a walkie-talkie on the phone.
Fingerprint Sensor & Sound: –
A fingerprint scanner is quite accurate but the display could light up a little bit faster. Finally, the loudspeaker is pretty good faster for the price of the phone and it can get quite loud.
The Doogee S60 has a 5.2-inch 1080p IPS LCD display plenty sharp and bright. It is covered with a Corning Gorilla Glass 5 for scratch resistance. It is a good size for a rugged smartphone, it is not so large while the screen is comfortable to use. The viewing angles are quite good and the sunlight legibility is also fine. The colours are punchy.
The camera can take pictures and video even when the phone is submerged in water. Also, the camera provides 9 different modes such as Auto, Night, party, Sports, Sunset and others. The overall image quality is just average like on most of these budget rugged phones. Well, you can take some usable images in good lighting conditions but they will still not be perfect and the camera usually collapses in low-light.
Selfies are not the best out there but they will look okay on social media.
The 1080p Full HD video looks kind of mediocre. I expected a more detailed footage. The 1080p selfie video is again could be more detailed same can be said about sound recording quality.
Performance & Memory: –
The Doogee S60 is a pretty powerful phone. It ships with a MediaTek Helio P25 chipset which clocked at Octa-Core 2.4GHz processor with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage that can be further expanded via the microSD card slot. This combination should ensure a solid level of performance.
The Gaming performance is great even if you play games on the very highest graphics settings like I did. Also, the phone stays cold to the touch which is quite impressive.
The User-Interface is based on Android 7, I like that it has preserved most of the stock Android look and feel, it has a few extra features. In fact, I’m not even sure if you’re going to use all those extra features. Just a name of few, there is a built-in toolbox app, quite a few gesture and motion controls that are however not always reliable and some extra features like a float gesture control.
There is also some fingerprint gesture control that I didn’t really use since the sensor is on back. Also, I don’t like the built-in newsfeed app and some unnecessary animation. For the most part, the Doogee S60 is a fast phone with quite a few apps installed. So, I can’t really complain about its performance.
The Doogee S60 performs well in the connectivity department as it didn’t have any problem with a call quality, signal reception, GPS, WiFi or Bluetooth. The phone has only 13 sensors but it has a Gyroscope for VR compatibility also the phone has NFC built-in.
The S60 features 5580 mAh battery with fast charging. It will not only last very long but also takes a little time to full charge. I was able to achieve over 10 hours of screen time even with a quite a few apps syncing in the background. Finally, the phone ships with a fast charger and it takes about 2 hours to fully charge the device. There is also a built-in wireless charging feature that not many rugged phones have.
The Doogee S60 is a powerful and a fast phone that is built to last and take a beating. I love the design, display overall performance and the battery life. However, there are some annoyances in the user interface but most importantly the overall camera performance is underwhelming like on most of the budget rugged phones.
At the end of the discussion, the Doogee S60 is a solid and powerful budget rugged phone that can be recommended to buy if you can live with a mediocre camera.
