Asus ZenFone 4 Selfie Pro
Hello, Friends! Today I’m going to take a look at Asus ZenFone 4 Selfie Pro Review. Asus is the pioneer of selfie smartphones with their ZenFone Selfie in 2015. This year’s ZenFone Selfie has made its comeback as a part of the ZenFone 4 series. Its new feature is its dual front cameras. So, Let’s find out-
Design & Build: –
ZenFone 4 Selfie has two variants, the regular and Pro versions. By glance, the design is exactly the same but actually, there is a fundamental difference. The Pro version has a metal body, while the regular version, called metal look is actually made from plastic. During our weekly use, this smartphone successfully brings us the comfort we need. Especially because the back of its body is not very easy to dirty. Although kinda slippery with the use of the metal body, slippery wouldn’t be avoidable.
Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro could be defined as a feminine smartphone. This impression came because of its attractive colour choices and thin body. If we compare with some previous Asus smartphone, especially Max series, we immediately will feel that this smartphone is very thin and light. But even with it weightlessness, this smartphone still feels very sturdy, especially in the frame that support its body part that feel really solid. And on the ZenFone 4 Selfie Pro, Asus has granted the requests from its users.
In this smartphone, Asus has given the users a capacitive back button and a white backlight for the recent apps. In addition, to make this smartphone feel more comfortable, the features also give you an exclusive-high class impression. Also, home button appearance is already more trendy. It doesn’t need to be hard-pressed, just a really light touch. And the sensor can directly read the fingerprint without having to wait for the screen to turn on.
Up top, you have the Dual Front-facing cameras along with sensors and LED flash. Down below is the fixed capacitive home button that also serves as a fingerprint scanner along with capacitive keys for navigation. The metallic volume rocker and power button are on the right side while the hybrid SIM slot is on the left. The noise cancelling mic is up top with a 3.5mm headphone jack, micro USB charging port, main microphone and speaker grilles are all at the bottom.
Flip on its back and you will see it’s all metal panel with a smooth matte finish. There’s the 16-megapixel main camera with LED flash in the middle and underneath it is the Asus logo and two antenna bands on both ends of the device.
The ZenFone 4 Selfie Pro sports a 5.5-inch AMOLED panel with a full HD 1080p resolution and a solid 401 pixels per inch pixel density. As for the standard version used IPS panel. Because of the use of AMOLED, the screen automatically becomes more colourful. The result is a display that is crisp and clear very bright, well-saturated colours and vivid display. The viewing angles are really nice. It still really nice to look at even if we change the size of the display and use the smallest sized font. Another fun feature is the special Always-on display in the ZenFone 4 Selfie Pro version.
This is the main selling point of this smartphone. Among all of the ZenFone 4 variants, only ZenFone Selfie that doesn’t have a rear Dual-Camera. The main camera has a little bulge, 16-MP resolution, Dual LED flash, gyro-based EIS, and PDAF.
In the main camera, we can use a Pro-Mode. With this mode we can do manual settings for focus, a shutter speed that is quite promising i.e 1/10.000 to 32 seconds, and also the ISO from 25 to 3200. When we try the main camera, we feel the shutter lag is not too responsive. Even when the light is quite enough but for the auto-focus, the response is actually good. The picture quality is arguably mediocre.
If the place is quite dark, the noise will easily be found. If the place is too bright, the dynamic range will seem exhausting.
Moving to the Front, there’s a 12-megapixelf/1.8 main selfie camera that uses Sony IMX 362 sensor, 6 layer lens, HDR, Beautify, LED flash and Duo Pixel technology. Plus one wide camera 120 degrees with 5-megapixel. Without further ado, we have done dozens or even hundreds of selfie images to know the quality.
The level of beautifying effects or Live Beautify that this smartphone provides is raging from 0 to 10. And we assume the only effective level is 1 to 6. Beyond those levels, instead of looking beautiful, they will produce weird looking selfie and reduce the details of the photo. Even if your face is full of acne, beautify level 5 was already suits for you. And when you do a selfie with a 12-megapixel camera, you will have the option to get a sharper image. The trick is by activating the Duo Pixel and the resolution will increase to 24-megapixel. But there is a consequence, the capturing process with this trick will need a longer time. It will take 2-3 seconds.
In addition to Duo Pixel, Asus also provides wide angle option through a second camera with 5-megapixel resolution. Please note that this wide-angle camera is only effective for an outdoor selfie. If you insist to use it indoor, the result will be noise. And we also see the effect of the fisheye where the object will be slightly curved, similar with a GoPro photo result.
The last thing that the front camera of this ZenFone 4 Selfie Pro offer is a portrait mode. This mode can be used either with a 12-megapixel camera or 5-megapixel wide camera. We can also combine with beautifying effects to make it look cooler. If you look at its result, the bokeh still looks less tidy. Although not perfect, the portrait mode is still fun to use.
Performance & Memory: –
The Asus ZenFone 4 Selfie Pro is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 which clocked at Octa-Core 2.0GHz processor. This chipset is used is one of the most middle-class favourites. Storage wise, the Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro comes with 4GB of RAM and 64 gigabytes of storage with 51.18 gigs usable but you can always expand this via a microSD card.
In terms of performance, this device will be able to handle all your day-to-day applications and even heavy multitasking. In gaming, without any issues, we have seen Snapdragon 625 performs really well.
As a ZenFone 4 series, we can make sure that ZenFone 4 Selfie Pro will be enhanced with ZeenUI 4. Also, it came with the current version of Android that has reached 7.1.1 version. At glance, its UI has no difference with ZenUI 3. But as the duration of usage continues, we finally found some new features of ZenUI 4 on this smartphone. Now, we can duplicate social media without having to use the third-party applications. Plus the number and variations of the theme have been much improved. There are also themes that support animation, a constantly-move theme.
To avoid boredom, you surely can customize the wallpaper. It can change itself and already support parallax effect. And one new feature, that almost lose our attention, turns out to be in the gallery that Asus said already supported Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Now, in the gallery, you can find an explore tab where your photos will be grouped automatically. For example, there will be a group of photos based on the face. It will make you easier to find photos you looking for.
It is having a good computing ability, the power consumption is very low. After hardly using this smartphone by only with one SIM card especially for YouTube streaming for up to two hours, our Screen on time never is under 6 hours with a total duration of 17 hours. Though only with the standard 3000 milliamp-hours battery. So, we can make sure you don’t need to bring a charger for a daily use of this smartphone.
Asus is definitely back in the Selfie game with the ZenFone 4 Selfie Pro. It came a bit late though considering that it’s competitors namely Oppo and Vivo have already established a strong presence in the market with selfie-centric devices. Still, it’s a worthy offering it has a slim and premium body, AMOLED display, good cameras and improves ZenUI 4.0. We like, it’s very nice bright display. It has a thin, light and premium body, dual front cameras with wide-angle and decent battery life. What we did not like, on the other hand, it’s dated chipset.
